Exploring students’ engagement with written corrective feedback in efl classroom settings across proficiency levels / Siti Mafulah

Mafulah, Siti - Nama Orang;

Abstrak
Teacher written corrective feedback is effective when the students engage with it. This study was aimed at exploring students rsquo engagement with written corrective feedback (WCF) in three kinds of engagement ndash affective cognitive and behavior whether the students rsquo engagement with WCF was influenced by their proficiency levels. In addition the factors that influenced students rsquo engagement with teacher written corrective feedback were also explored in this study. Qualitative research design especially multiple case study was applied in this study. The participants were third-year university students. The offered writing course in that semester was Argumentative Writing. The participants were from two different universities in Indonesia. Based on the TOEFL-like scores the participants were grouped into 3 categories 2 students were from high proficiency levels 12 students were from moderate proficiency levels and 7 students were from low proficiency levels. The data of this study was gathered through observation and interview. Observation was done to know the engagement of the students and interview was done to obtain valid data about students rsquo engagement. The factors that influenced the students rsquo engagement with the teachers rsquo WCF was derived from the interview result and it was done inductively. The procedures in collecting the data comprised some steps. Observation was done to the whole students. After that the interview was delivered to the students. To reach data saturation interviews were done three times. The first interview was delivered to all students through Google form. The closed-ended questions were in the written form and the students answered in the written form too. The items of the interview in the Google form were the same as what was written in the observation sheet. Then the result of this interview was collected and it was to confirm the class observation. The second interview was done after the students received WCF. For the second interview the respondents were categorized based on the proficiency levels. They were asked about their engagement with WCF including cognitive behavioral and affective engagement. After the students revised their writing draft the last interview was delivered. The data of the last interview were analyzed by using NVivo. Using NVivo analysis with Matrix Coding Query it was found that cognitive engagement of the students is the largest number of the students rsquo responses (225 direct code) they are followed by students rsquo affective engagement (146 direct code) and the lowest one is students rsquo behavior engagement (132 direct code). In terms of cognitive engagement the results showed that 95.8% students of the high proficiency level engage cognitively 85.3% students of the moderate proficiency level engage cognitively and 66.7% students of the low proficiency level engage cognitively. Regarding behavioral engagement the results showed that 80% students of the high proficiency level and 75.8% students of moderate proficiency level were well engage behaviorally. On the contrary to high and moderate proficiency levels less than 50% students of low proficiency levels less engaged behaviorally. For the affective engagement 91.5% were students of high proficiency level 74.5% were students of moderate proficiency level and 48.4% were students of low proficiency level. This means that high and moderate proficient students were well-engaged affectively and low proficient students less engaged affectively. From the findings it can be concluded that students with different proficiency levels showed different levels of engagement. Factors that influenced students rsquo engagement were categorized into two types internal (students rsquo motivation and emotion) and external factors (teacher and online setting). Due to the different proficiency levels teachers should understand the patterns of the engagement of the students across proficiency levels. The strategy that teachers apply in the class should accommodate all proficiency levels. Therefore it is better for the teachers to provide the students more chances to do teacher-student conferences after receiving feedback. Due to the limitations of the study it is suggested that the future research explore deeper on the students rsquo engagement with WCF by using think aloud protocols. In addition it is important to do experimental research on the students rsquo engagement with teacher written corrective feedback to know the improvement of the students rsquo learning outcomes.
