White male privilege in the man music video by Taylor Swift: a semiotic analysis / Rizka Ayu Kartini

Abstrak
This study analyses Taylor Swift rsquo s critique of gender inequality through one of her music works titled The Man. I focus on the video rsquo s portrayal of a man with male privilege to understand the use of visuals in illustrating meanings intended in the song rsquo s lyrics. The data are in the form of screenshots and lyrics obtained from the music video itself which is freely accessible on various media-sharing platforms. Using Barthes semiotics theory to explain the denotative and connotative meanings in visual and verbal signs in the music video I demonstrate that the video exposes gender inequality by blatantly highlighting male privileges.
