The effect of teacher’s oral and written corrective feedback on efl learners’ ability in using the simple past tense / Karenia Jannah Dewi Prayogo

Abstrak
Giving proper feedback is essential since many learners still need help in learning grammar. There are two main types of corrective feedback oral and written feedback. It is necessary to conduct a study to know which corrective feedback is more effective in learning English grammar. This study aims to determine the effect of oral and written corrective feedback on learners grammar ability at an Islamic Junior High School 1 Malang and detect which would get the best outcome on learners grammar ability specifically on the simple past tense. This research applied a quasi- experimental design with two groups 20 learners of the VII G class as Experimental Group 1 and 20 learners of the VII I class as the Experimental Group 2. The data were taken from the pre-test and post-test. To measure the significant differences between oral and written corrective feedback the means of the tests of both groups were analyzed using the Analysis of Covariance Test (ANCOVA). This study reveals that both types of feedback are effective in improving learners grammar. However according to the means of both post-test scores the oral corrective feedback is more effective in helping learners understand grammar.
