Student’s anxiety in learning english: a case study at MTS. Muhammadiyah 1 Dukun / Qurrotul Uyun

Abstrak
Abstract Knowing anxiety has received attention in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research as an important component of personality-traits. This current study analyzed and described the level and factor that contributed to anxiety of students in Mts. Muhammadiyah 1 Dukun Gresik. This study was conducted under descriptive qualitative research involving 28 Students of Grade 8 in the academic year 2022/2023. The data was collected through the FLCAS questionnaire developed based on Horwitz and Cope (1986) and a guided interview. The questionnaire was made up of 33 pronouncements. Each item on the scale was scored on a five-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (strongly agree) to 5 (strongly disagree). The interview guide consisted of 8 questions that were used to get further information from the students. The study revealed that the levels of anxiety experienced by students were various there are 3 57% students felt very relaxed 7 14% felt relaxed 32 14% students felt anxious and the are 56 14% students felt mildly anxious which is the most percentage that student experienced. In addition factors that contributed to student rsquo s anxiety were from internal factors(students rsquo beliefs low self-esteem lack of preparation lack of vocabulary incomprehensible input) and external factors (classroom management/environment). In the end the researchers hope that educators could find proper ways of teaching that suit their students rsquo situations and build their confidence for good quality of English learning and teaching.
