Cultural representation in the animated film aladdin wa al-mishbahu as-sihri and wish dragon / Rofiqotul Maulidan Nafdilah
Abstrak
Representation in film is an interesting topic to study. Film itself is a medium of embodiment or representation of reality. Various kinds of reality can be represented through film one of which is cultural reality. This study aims to analyze the relationship between animated film Aladdin wa Al-Mishbahu As-Sihri and Wish Dragon one which seems to have been an adaptation of the other. In addition this study also aims to analyze several forms of cultural representation in the animated film Aladdin wa Al-Mishbahu As-Sihri and Wish Dragon. For the relationship between the two films the study takes the intrinsic elements as the yardsticks to identify both commonalities and differences between the two and eventually determine the degree of dependance of one over the other and the extent of adaptation made. For forms of cultura representation this study uses Barthes rsquo semiotic theory to elaborate on social and kinship systems or interpersonal relationships in society religious systems and beliefs or interpersonal relationship with their beliefs and artistic systems or interpersonal relationships with community traditions The result shows that the film Wish Dragon is inspired by the movie Aladdin wa Al-Mishbahu As-Sihri. There are some character modifications as well as a plot that includes some elements of Chinese culture in the film Wish Dragon. In addition there are also several forms of representation of Middle Eastern culture in the film Aladdin wa Al-Mishbahu As-Sihri and representation of Chinese culture in the film Wish Dragon.
