Stereotypes against LGBTQ in the miseducation of cameron post: a critical discourse analysis / Aulia Rachma Ghiffari Putri

Abstrak
Discourses on LGBTQ acceptance in society and how they should be viewed in different contexts are still highly contentious topics. As LGBTQ issues become more accepted as normal filmmakers are releasing an increasing number of movies containing LGBTQ themes. Yet inaccurate portrayals of LGBTQ people in mainstream media can contribute to the perpetuation of stereotypes in society which can pose a long-term harmful effect on LGBTQ people s rights and safety. Therefore this study seeks to investigate those stereotypes perceived by LGBTQ people in LGBTQ-themed movies for instance The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018) directed by Desiree Akhavan by using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) (van Djik 1993 Fairclough 2013). In addition research reviews of LGBTQ causes and gender fluidity theory is used to explain to break the stereotypes the LGBTQ community faces that are growing in society.
