Abstrak
This investigation examines the causes of error made by ELT students. A descriptive qualitative method were used to this study. The subject of this study was ELT students rsquo cohort 2021 and the instrument that used in this study was their simple essay writing. The steps in the data analysis procedure included finding characterizing and explaining faults in students writing. The research employed the theory presented by Dulay et al. (1982) to examine the categories of error and the theory of Brown (2007) to investigate the origins of the errors. The findings showed that the sources of errors found in this study were interlingual error and intralingual error. The total error of interlingual was 16 errors consisting of misordering addition marking and misformation of regularizations. The total error of intralingual was 84 errors consisting of omission simple addition regularizations error misformation alternating forms and archi-forms. This implied that the students still lack grammar mastery and their understanding in English forms should be improved.
