An analysis of poem entitled alone by edgar allan poe with biographical and symbolism approach / Eni Hendrawati
Abstrak
The poem entitled ldquo Alone rdquo was written by Edgar Allan Poe in 1829. The poem tells the story of an unnamed character ldquo I rdquo that has a tough childhood. The author used a Biographical and Symbolistic approach and through analysis we learn that the character ldquo I rdquo is Poe himself. Poe divided his childhood into three sections in the poem firstly his childhood when living with his biological mother Elizabeth Poe secondly his life after he was adopted by the Allan rsquo s family and joined military service and lastly when Poe lost his adoptive mother that he loved Frances Allan. Symbols of natural objects which are found in the poem such as storm torrent red cliff of the mountain sun lightning and thunder symbolizes Poe rsquo s childhood which was tough and full of twists and turns. The symbols of spring and autumn symbolize the transition of Poe rsquo s childhood when Poe was almost three years old and when Poe was growing up into adulthood. The symbols of heaven where the angels live Poe symbolized the angel as the mother figure and the father figure John Allan is symbolized as the demon.
