The effectiveness of toulmin model of argument to improve students’ achievement in writing argumentative essays / Bondan Charisnanda Mac HP
Abstrak
This study is intended to investigate the use of Toulmin Model of argument to improve students rsquo critical thinking skills and writing achievement on argumentative essay. Research design of quasi experiment with pretest-posttest was used to investigate students rsquo writing achievement of argumentative essay and critical thinking skills. The subjects were eleventhh grade students of vocational high school 10 Malang. Cooperative learning technique is used for teaching argumentative essay for both classes. The difference is that Toulmin Argument Model is implemented during writing instruction in experimental class. Students rsquo writing is used for obtaining data on critical thinking skills and their writing achievement. Essay Scoring rubric of Illinois Critical Thinking is used to measure students rsquo critical thinking skills. The findings of this study show Toulmin Model of Argument is more effective to improve critical thinking skills and writingg achievement on the part of students. It is shown by higher score of writing achievement and critical thinking skills obtained by experiment class than those obtained by control class.
