The correlation between 2019 ele students’ reading habit and their reading comprehension achievement / Pradipta Abbi Risnatama

Abstrak
The status of English as lingua franca marks the importance of English comprehension. Although being overshadowed by speaking skill reading is also important to acquire a language. As previous studies mainly focus on determining the most effective strategies to enhance reading comprehension this study highlights the effect of reading frequency. The study used a correlational research design and involved 53 ELE students. The aim of this study is to investigate whether reading habits have a strong effect on the reading comprehension achievement of ELE students at the tertiary level. There are some previous researches with similar objectives but the study differs in terms of the subjects and scope of the research which offers a new perspective on the topic. The research instruments were tested for validity and reliability and included a questionnaire to measure the students reading habits and a reading comprehension test to measure their reading achievement. The Spearman correlation analysis was used to analyze the data revealing a high positive correlation between ELE students reading habits and their reading comprehension achievement with a Spearman correlation value of 0.707 ( rho gt 0). These findings emphasize the importance of developing positive reading habits in enhancing ELE students language proficiency and encourages the heightened frequency of written text exposure.
