Language convergence and divergence among university students in Malang City / Zahwa Nabila
Abstrak
There is a greater chance that language accommodation in Malang happened due to the significant student mobility the influx of students from DKI Jakarta is no exception. In this case it leads to an increase in the usage of colloquial Jakartan Indonesian in Malang. This study investigates the disparities in language accommodation among Malang students emphasizing their perceptions of colloquial Jakartan Indonesian. It applied a qualitative approach with data taken from a survey process through Google Forms which was divided into two forms one for students from Malang and one for students outside Malang. Participants in this study were university students in Malang from class 2018 to 2022. The students were divided into three groups students from Malang students from DKI Jakarta and the surrounding areas and students from other regions. The results indicated that the difference in language accommodation among students in Malang lies in the practice of using colloquial Jakartan Indonesian which depends on the media the interlocutor and the circumstances. It was also related to the notion that colloquial Jakartan Indonesian is an informal version of Indonesian and serves as its alternative. It also showed that Malang students usage of colloquial Jakartan Indonesian indicates xenocentric tendencies but not inferiority complexes.
