Insights from tourism vocational high school students on english learning needs for self-study material development / Lutfianto Alfi Rahman

Abstrak
Despite its rapid growth the Indonesian tourism industry struggles with its human resources quality one of them being the low English proficiency. Thus it is important to improve the quality of English education in vocational high schools by conducting a needs analysis. This study aims to identify the students rsquo needs by looking at several aspects (1) The importance of English to them (2) Their attitude towards English learning (3) The suitability of the materials used (4) Students rsquo self-study practices (5) Materials availability (6) Students views on their English skills and (7) on English learning. A questionnaire is used to collect data from 48 tourism vocational high school students. The responses show that students have positive attitude towards English learning and its importance. Students also agree various suitable learning materials are available and they should also learn independently. They have different opinions on their difficulties preferred methods and materials in English learning but most agree they need to improve their speaking skill the most. Based on the findings it is recommended to (1) re-evaluate the materials used (2) encourage independent study (3) include more speaking activities accompanied by the teacher or audio materials and (4) provide more music and video materials.
