Correlation between students’ use of social media and their writing skill / Adita Rochmatul Isti\'anah

Abstrak
The development of current technology teachers or lecturers must adjust the teaching media in their teaching-learning process. One of the applications in which many students are interested is social media. Writing is one of the English skills that must be mastered by students. All university-level students are obliged to write at a particular level that meets specific requirements for grammar spelling and vocabulary. The objective of this study is to find out the correlation between the use of social media and the academic writing skill of English Literature undergraduate students. This study was carried out using a correlational design. Twenty-five students were chosen as the sample. The data were collected through a questionnaire and a writing test. The questionnaire was used to determine the use of social media by students while the writing test was used to determine their writing skill scores. The result shows that there is a positive correlation between students rsquo use of social media and their writing skill and has a correlation with a significant value (Sig) of 0.001. The result of simple linear regression analysis show that the use of social media correlates the ability to write academic essays (71.2%). It can be concluded that students who actively communicate on social media are likely to perform well in writing. The recommendation for students can optimize the use of social media as a medium to improve writing skills for lecturers play an active role in supporting students in the learning process of writing and for further research is to increase the number of respondents so that the research results are wider and not limited.
