Perceiving the character development of dickon sowerby in burnett\'s the secret garden novel: using perspectives of watson\'s behaviorist theory / Hanim Maghfiroh
Abstrak
This study aimed to discuss the character development of Dickon Sowerby in The Secret Garden a novel written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Dickon is a child character who has a role as a supporting character towards the main characters Mary Lennox and Colin Craven in the story. His characterization was analyzed using Watson rsquo s behaviorist theory of the character development of children to elaborate on some aspects emphasized while observing the developmental process of children. Those aspects consist of observable behavior and environment. The dialogue and narration related to Dickon were used as the data of analysis. Relating to Watson rsquo s behaviorist theory we analyzed (1) Dickon rsquo s behavior towards his family (2) his behavior towards neighbors (3) and his behavior towards nature wild creatures. Moreover we analyzed the environment that influenced his character development started from (1) his home which consists of parents and siblings and (2) the moorland which is the heath located in the neighborhood.
