Employing english songs to improve the vocabulary mastery of the seventh-graders / Rozabiatul Silvani

Abstrak
Vocabulary is an important aspect for seventh-graders. Without extensive vocabulary the seventh-grade students cannot use the language for communication. Based on Penerapan Dalam Rangka Pemulihan Pembelajaran seventh-graders are expected to be able to communicate their ideas and experiences using the vocabulary in English but most of the seventh-grade students lack vocabulary knowledge and have difficulty remembering and memorizing the vocabulary words. Thus this study aimed to improve student rsquo s vocabulary mastery by employing English songs. It also examined how the strategy could improve students rsquo vocabulary mastery and gain students rsquo responses towards the strategy. The subjects of this study were 10 students in MTs Al Barokah Robotika Sleman in the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic year. Classroom Action Research (CAR) was used as the study design. It was conducted in one cycle. The instruments of this study were the vocabulary test observation sheet and interview session. The vocabulary test measures students rsquo vocabulary mastery. The result of vocabulary test scores showed improvement in students rsquo vocabulary mastery. Eighty percent of the students can pass the criteria of success and all of the students gave positive responses to the strategy. Employing English songs could improve vocabulary mastery by selecting the appropriate song and providing activities to improve vocabulary mastery in a receptive way.
