Exploring efl learners’ grammatical errors and mistakes in writing / Muhammad Nadhif Daroini

Abstrak
This study was conducted to analyze the grammatical errors and mistakes in writing essays by second semester students of the English Department. Grammatical deviations found in participants rsquo essays were classified into errors and mistakes. The errors and mistakes were classified into fourteen categories proposed by Azar (2006) singular-plural word form word choice verb tense add a word omit a word word order incomplete sentence spelling punctuation capitalization article meaning not clear run-on sentence. This study used content analysis design and qualitative descriptive approach. The instruments of this study was participants rsquo essays table analysis interview guides and the scoring formula. The result of this study showed that second semester students of English Department still committed errors and mistakes in their writing. After analyzing the essays it was found that the participants committed 76 grammatical deviations. The interview findings showed that there were 48 errors and 28 mistakes. Run-on sentences became the most common errors with 13 occurrences (27.08%). Capitalization and punctuation were the most common mistakes with 5 occurrences (17.85%).
