The grammatical errors of english in the spoken and written language production of multilingual children in indonesia / Anisatul Ilmiah
Abstrak
Mastering English grammar as foreign language can be quite challenging especially for Indonesian elementary-level students who do not engage with English on a daily basis. The objective of this research is to compare and to identify the grammatical errors made by 3rd graders at the Laboratory Elementary School Malang in the story production (spoken corpus) and the recount texts (written corpus). This research employed a quantitative descriptive approach based on the Linguistic Category Classification and Surface Strategy Taxonomy proposed by Dulay et al. (1982). The data were sourced from CBLING (Corpus on Bilingual Learners rsquo Languages) by collecting transcribed texts and recount texts from a sample of 40 students. The findings show that students made more frequent errors in the recount texts (written form) compared to the story production errors (spoken form). The results also reveal the errors made by students can be categorized into past verb usage time markers plural forms and prepositions. Past verb usage was the most dominant error in the recount text form (RT) with 439 errors (77%) followed by time markers in the RT with 26 errors (76%) plural forms in the Story Production (SP) with 41 errors (55%) and the least is preposition errors in RT with 104 errors (41%). This implies that Indonesian learners commonly make grammatical errors during the process of foreign language acquisition. Thus the role of external factors (teachers educational institutions and parental support) must build stronger cooperation to improve the language learner performance particularly for elementary students.
