Language as a social class marker: a piece of evidence from language mixing practices in the indonesian soap opera / Nabila Anisya Rachma
Abstrak
The growth of foreign language abilities particularly English is increasing rapidly. Subsequently the code-mixing practice become a trend and a common normal sight in a society such in daily conversations various song lyrics and even in the Indonesian soap opera as well. This article tries to discover the types and reasons why one of the characters in Indonesian soap opera utilizes code-mixing consistently in her dialogue as well as to find out if there is a connection between the utilization of language-mixing practices and her social class marker. The data was gathered from the RCTI application and derived from the dialogue in the Indonesian soap opera entitled Ikatan Cinta episodes 759 to 764. A descriptive qualitative research approach is used in this paper. The results show that there are three types of code-mixing such as insertion alternation and congruent lexicalization. There is also a substantial correlation between code-mixing and one rsquo s identity in terms of social status social roles and economic status.
