The implementation of react method to enhance students’ reading comprehension achievement / Putri Lestari

Abstrak
This research was intended to enhance the students rsquo reading comprehension achievement by implementing REACT method. The preliminary study was conducted in the form of students rsquo mean score and interview. According to the findings of a preliminary study carried out at SMAN 1 Kencong it was discovered that the tenth science 5 students in the tenth grade had difficulties in reading. The students had difficulties in getting the information from the text because they only read the text without comprehending it well. It was proved by looking at their mean reading score 45.71% students. It also did not achieve the minimum of standard score (75) for English subject. This present research was Classroom Action Reserach. The subject were 35 students of the tenth grade of Science 5 of SMAN 1 Kencong. This study was done in one cycle. It was conducted in seven meetings. The first meeting until the sixth meeting was the implementation of the action and the last meeting was administering the test. The reading test and observation checklist were the instruments used to get the data. The procedures of this study was planning acting observing and reflecting. The findings of this study indicated that REACT method activities succeeded in enhancing students rsquo reading comprehension achievement and participation. The findings could achieve the criteria of success 1). If 75% of students actively participate in teaching learning process the application of REACT method could increase students rsquo participation and 2). If reading comprehension test score is at least 75 and can be achieved by at least 75% of the students the application REACT method could enhance students reading comprehension mean score. Moreover in this research there were four indicators conducted REACT method during learning process. The indicators of observation checklist were 1). Asking questions related to the pictures and their experience 2). Arranging jumbled paragraph into narrative text 3). Discussing and identifying the elements of narrative text 4) answering questions related to the text. The students were categorized as active if they could fulfilled at least three indicators. The result of the observation showed the students rsquo active participation in the implementation of REACT was succeeded. The average result showed 81.42% students was active. Besides the result of reading comprehension achievement showed that the percentage of students who got the minimum standard score ge 75 it can be seen by looking at the average of result was 82.85 % students. Thus this research was stopped. Regarding to the findings it could be conclude that the implementation of REACT method is a successful method to enhance students rsquo reading comprehensions and participation in the teaching and learning of reading. Therefore English teachers are suggested to implement this method in teaching and learning of reading. Finally the future researchers are recommended to conduct researches related to REACT activities for different subjects and focuses.
