Abstrak
Maxim Gorky rsquo s Mother tells the development of consciousness of the main character Pelagueya Nilovna in her journey amid the socialist movement struggle. This study focuses on Pelagueya rsquo s consciousness development by looking at it through a class consciousness perspective to find out whether Pelagueya is class-conscious or not. This issue is analyzed using Marxist theories on class consciousness. The analysis of Pelagueya rsquo s consciousness is divided into three development stages namely the early stage the middle stage and the final stage. The result of this study shows that Pelagueya rsquo s consciousness in the novel has achieved a form of class consciousness. This can be seen from the compatibility between Pelagueya rsquo s class position and her understanding of the urgency to advance and win the interests of her class which in the end manifested in her participation in the class struggle.
