Out-of-field efl teachers’ identity construction: a narrative inquiry on experiences of professional development / Riza Nadya Prastanti

Abstrak
Teachers rsquo professional identity is an important component in determining teachers performance. Understanding teachers identities and evolution is critical for understanding their professional lives the quality of their instruction their motivation and dedication to teaching as well as their career decision-making. The development itself is influenced by many different factors and conditions and one of them is professional development. It holds true that some studies on the influence of professional development on teachers identity construction have been carried out. However there rsquo s still a paucity of research addressing the influence of professional development on out-of-field EFL teachers rsquo identity construction. With the assumption that out-of-field EFL teachers may face greater challenges and have different professional development demands that still need to be addressed this current study aims to scrutinize the influence of professional development activities on out-of-field EFL teachers professional identity construction. Participants of the current study are two experienced teachers who were chosen based on their years of teaching experience the range of classes taught as well as professional development programs they rsquo ve participated in. This study reports on 1) the challenges faced by out-of-field EFL teachers during the early years of their teaching career 2) the professional development they rsquo ve engaged in 3) the influences of professional development to out-of-field EFL teachers rsquo identity construction and 4) the implication of future development programs needed by out-of-field EFL teachers. A narrative inquiry using multiple case studies is chosen as the design of this study to address the research questions. The data of this study were garnered from semi-structured interviews and document analysis which includes teachers rsquo professional development reports and teachers rsquo lesson plans. The data analysis process includes transcribing coding and constructing narratives. The results are presented in three consecutive parts to answer the research questions. The results of the current study revealed that effective professional development helped 2 experienced out-of-field EFL teachers conquer early years teaching challenges and regain their self-esteem allowing them to improve several aspects that build teachers rsquo identity. The aspects include language proficiency disciplinary knowledge pedagogical content knowledge teaching skills and contextual knowledge. This current narrative study also implies future development programs focusing on improving out-of-field teachers rsquo language proficiency.
