Abstrak
This research analyzes the use of diction in native and non-native English speakers in the Canadian sitcom ldquo Kim rsquo s Convenience rdquo and the main characters Appa and Umma rsquo s motivation in language learning based on emotions. This research used a qualitative method that focused on content analysis. The data were taken from episode 8 of season 3 of the sitcom titled ldquo To Him It May Concern rdquo with a total length of 22 minutes. Based on the types of diction by Keraf (2010) the analysis reveals that native and non-native speakers of English in Kim rsquo s Convenience have different uses of diction. Non-native speakers frequently used denotative meaning in their communication with a total of 10 (18.18%) while native speakers used connotative meaning more regularly with a total of 27 (49.09%). Moreover this research also aims to elaborate on how emotional components such as feelings bodily responses sense of purpose and expressive behaviors (Maclyntre et al. 2019) motivate thoughts and actions of language learning in the media representation of immigrant communities. We find that Appa and Umma rsquo s motivation in language learning is motivated by the emotional components. Their motivation is mainly influenced by negative emotions which lead them to advance their vocabulary.
