The influence of needs for affiliation on online disinhibition effect in early adulthood / Iqbal Gunawan

Gunawan, Iqbal - Nama Orang;

Abstrak
This study examines the correlation between needs for affiliation and the online disinhibition effect among early adulthood social media users (18-40 years old). The online disinhibition effect is characterized by increased emotional expression online in early adults with needs for affiliation. The aim of this research is to understand the influence of needs for affiliation on the online disinhibition effect on social media among early adults. Therefore the study employs a correlational design where needs for affiliation serve as the independent variable (x) and the online disinhibition effect is the dependent variable (y).The research utilizes the needs for affiliation scale (Hill 1987) comprising 18 items with a reliability level of 0.832 and the online disinhibition effect adapted scale (Mantara et al. 2023) with a reliability of 0.826 consisting of 8 items. Through a survey of 101 respondents the study reveals a significant positive correlation between needs for affiliation and the online disinhibition effect (R 0.426 p lt 0.05). This implies that the higher an individual s needs for affiliation the greater the likelihood of experiencing the online disinhibition effect when interacting on social media. The R-square value of 0.181 indicates that approximately 18.1% of the variation in the online disinhibition effect can be explained by needs for affiliation. This suggests that there are other factors beyond needs for affiliation that can also influence the online disinhibition effect warranting further research to comprehend the complexity of this phenomenon more deeply.
