Investigating language dominance among junior-high-school students studying in an english-arabic environment / Putri Lasminiar
Abstrak
This research aims to recognize the language that is dominantly used by the students in their daily lives around English-Arabic environment along with the sub-components of language dominance (language history use proficiency and attitudes). It employed a qualitative method case study and the subjects involved were five students of 3rd grade of junior high school. To obtain the data the instrument used were Bilingual Language Profile (BLP) questionnaire interview guides and field notes. The findings showed that the students dominantly used English in the environment. In terms of language history and use although they acquired the two languages when they were under ten years old they started to feel confident to use it when they were in the environment. In terms of language proficiency and attitudes English grammar was easier to learn than Arabic and they believed that English was the language that had to be mastered in order to grab a bright future of their lives.
