The ninth-graders\' reading motivation and their reading comprehension / Hilda Prisca Rofiunnisa

Abstrak
This article presents the results of a study aiming to determine the correlation between reading motivation specifically intrinsic motivation and reading comprehension in the context of ninth grade level. The participants of this study were 31 students of the ninth grade of a state junior high school in Malang East Java during the 2023/2024 academic year. The students passed two academic years of English subjects and were assumed to have developed their level of reading comprehension. This study used correlational-quantitative design involving one predicting variable (reading motivation) and one response variable (reading comprehension). The data were collected using two instruments (1) a reading motivation questionnaire adopted from Motivation for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) by Wigfield et al. (1996) and (2) a reading comprehension test selected and adapted from a supplementary English practice book. The data were then analyzed using descriptive correlational and regression analysis. With the significant value of 0.862 it was discovered that there is a significant correlation between the ninth-graders rsquo intrinsic reading motivation and reading comprehension. It was categorized as a very strong positive correlation. Moreover it can be interpreted that the ninth-graders rsquo intrinsic motivation strongly affects reading comprehension skills. Therefore parents and English teachers are recommended to reflect on and encourage the growth of students rsquo motivation in reading so that their reading comprehension skills improve.
