Twisting linguistic ambiguity in written verbal humor: Indonesia-English tweets / Amanda Pramoedya Wardani

Abstrak
Indonesian jokes often include English words phrases or sentences which sometimes create ambiguity as well as humor. They are often shared in social media such as Instagram Twitter and Tik-Tok. In this paper the author aims to analyze the ambiguity that occurs in Indonesian humor tweets that contain English words phrases or sentences. The research aims to answer the following research questions (1) what kind of linguistic ambiguity appears in the Indonesia-English humorous tweets (2) what is the frequency of occurrence of each type And (3) why does particular ambiguity appear the most in the Indonesia-English humorous tweets Forty-five tokens were analyzed using a descriptive qualitative approach. The result of the data analysis shows that there are two types of ambiguity occur in Indonesia-English humorous tweets they are phonological ambiguity and lexical ambiguity. However the difference in frequency between the two is very significant 41 (91%) data contain phonological ambiguity and 4 (9%) data contain lexical ambiguity. The reason phonological ambiguity often appears is because the sound (phone) is the smallest unit of language so it might be easier to create humor by playing or manipulating the sound of either Indonesian or English vocabulary.
