English acronyms and initialisms used by indonesian late adolescent tiktokers / Jenny Putri Siahaan

Abstrak
English acronyms and initialisms are often found in daily conversation and also in social media. This research aims to find out the most commonly used English acronyms and initialisms and the reasons for the use of English acronyms and initialisms by Indonesian late adolescent TikTok users. The research rsquo s design used descriptive qualitative in the form of open-ended questions. The data are taken from 74 Indonesian late adolescents (18 to 21 years old). The result showed that the acronym ldquo LOL rdquo (Laughing Out Loud) is the most familiar and commonly used English acronym by 62 Indonesian late adolescent TikTokers (93.9%). Similarly the initialisms ldquo FYI rdquo (For Your Information) and ldquo IDK rdquo (I Don rsquo t Know) are the most familiar and commonly used English initialisms by 62 Indonesian late adolescent TikTok users (93.9%). There are five reasons for the use of English acronyms and initialisms which are (1) to save time and accelerate the delivery of information because there is no need to write or speak too long (2) to feel more up-to-date with the times due to the trend in this era (3) to make the conversation more enjoyable and more connected (4) to show intimacy and convenience and (5) to feel cool and more confident.
