Exploring efl students\' perceptions of artificial intelligence in language learning / Prambudi Nur Adhitama

Abstrak
Artificial intelligence (AI) has gotten more crucial to various aspect of life due to its ability to emulate intellectual processes performed by machinery particularly systems for computers. This study employs a mixed method technique to analyzed EFL students rsquo perspective towards Artificial Intelligence system for their English language learning progress. This sequential explanatory research design included 81 EFL students from Malang in East Java Indonesia. The research instruments of this study was adapted from similar previous study to analyzed students rsquo perspective towards four domains of AI measurement scale in learning English language in higher education. A Google Form link was used to share the online questionnaire to the respondents. The questionnaire consisted of 20 statements with four Likert scales strongly disagree disagree agree and strongly agree. After the respondents returned their responses there will be 20 questions that will be asked to several chosen participants through interview to further analyzed both quantitative and qualitative data. This study showed that students positively perceived four domains of the AI measurement scale in learning the English language. Needs and methods of AI application as learning strategies obtained the highest average mean score which implies the necessity for both lecturer and student on the foundation of AI application method to be implemented in formal education settings. On the other hand when compared to other domains the Effectiveness of AI applications in Learning English had the lowest average score. However the overall effectiveness of AI applications was still considered a great advantage for the majority of participants in this study therefore the effectiveness of AI applications in learning English remains a beneficial perspective. Based on the findings of this study the development of EFL students rsquo cognition in educational settings is crucial to continuously evaluate how AI systems constrain and enable responsible ethical action. From this research study AI systems are well- suited for collecting informal evidence of skills experience and competence from open data sources based on EFL students perceptions. The results of this study suggest that many tasks and instructional roles with summative assessment might be automated. The formative assessment might be higher in educational systems emphasizing EFL students development and social competencies through the lens of technology especially AI systems.
