Daniswara, Landry Dwiyoga - Nama Orang;

Abstrak
Critical feedback is always perceived negatively by students as it is punishing and uninformative. However in the debating class the need to improve the students rsquo speaking skill and critical thinking is paramount. Some lecturers do not have any alternative to deliver critical feedback. This study therefore aimed to investigate the online critical feedback structure in debate to improve the students rsquo speaking skill through the argumentation process. The result of this study is expected to give insights for teachers or lecturers teaching debate on what structure of critical feedback needed to perform and how to deliver the structure of critical feedback so the information is positive constructive and informative. Using a case study method the data were obtained from several sources including direct observation documentation by using video-recording and collecting document of course outline and semi-structured interview for lecturer and six selected students performing the debate simulation. All data were analyzed based on the steps provided by Cresswell (2018). The data analysis process included organizing data from general to specific reading all the data coding and interpreting. The result of this study describes three things related to online critical feedback in debate. Firstly the structure of online critical feedback used by the lecturer was focusing on manner and matter. The critical feedback was also delivered through oral and written feedback. The media used for delivering the critical feedback are zoom and WhatsApp. Secondly to minimize the negative impact of the critical feedback the lecturer used politeness strategy covering bald on record (saying as it is) positive politeness (giving advice/suggestion) and negative politeness (using questions). Lastly the students rsquo perception regarding online critical feedback was positive. In accordance with results this study provides some suggestions for improvement and future research. Firstly the suggestion aims to find out the effectiveness of the critical feedback structure toward students rsquo speaking skills. Secondly the suggestion aims to make the researcher invite more subjects in order to know the whole perception of the students receiving the critical feedback. Lastly the topics or motions need to be expanded and related to the current issues. With all these suggestions it is expected that the future research will give greater implications to the existing one.
