Abstrak
Group work is one of the methods used in the teaching and learning process. Teachers usually apply group work as a strategy in the classroom for students to complete their tasks because of the many benefits of group work to achieve learner-centred learning in this era. Dividing students into groups also helps teachers facilitate students acquisition of knowledge. One of the crucial things to consider while working in groups is the students gender. The possibility of single-gender and mixed-gender group formation will be created among groups. Therefore this study explores eight university EFL students rsquo perspectives challenges and experiences working in single-gender and mixed-gender groups. There are five elements of group work mentioned by Johnson and Johnson (2018) positive interdependence individual accountability promotive interactions social skills and group processing. The group work process refers to the elements mentioned by Johnson and Johnson. This study is a phenomenological study with a qualitative design where single-gender and mixed-gender groups become the phenomenon that proposes to be identified described and interpreted from students rsquo experiences. Eight participants participated in this study five females and three males were fourth-semester students taking the English Language Education (ELE) program. The instrument was an interview conducted three times for each participant. The questions in the interview sections were piloted with five volunteers. The data was analyzed using Van Kaam rsquo s method of data analysis modified by Moustakas (1994) which consists of several steps horizonalization reduction thematic clustering individual textural description individual structural description composite textual-structural description and composite description to get the meaning and essence of participants rsquo experiences. The result is divided into three parts following the three research questions. Then each research question provides two sections single-gender groups and mixed-gender groups. First EFL students rsquo perspectives of single-gender groups show three themes a relaxed group work environment straightforward communication and easily delaying group work. Mixed-gender groups also provide three themes reliable members sharing diverse opinions and uncomfortable communication. Second the challenges faced by EFL students include providing two themes for each group ways of conducting group work and postponing doing group work tasks in single-gender groups and uneasy communication and disorganized group work time for mixed-gender groups. Third the themes show up in students rsquo experiences while working in single-gender groups freer communication and interdependence and mixed-gender groups unfree communication and unequal distribution of tasks. The discussions reveal the essence of EFL students rsquo perspectives challenges and experiences as the highlight themes which show commonalities in their experience while working in single-gender and mixed-gender groups communication productivity and efficiency in group work and individual contributions and responsibilities. Hence future research can also research group work specify single-gender and mixed-gender groups with different focuses subjects methods and participants or add more instruments to enrich the findings to get wider and deeper data.
