Abstrak
Due to the global pandemic in 2019 the learning and teaching modes in Indonesia have changed drastically in recent years. Previously learning and teaching modes in Indonesia used the traditional method in which classes are held in offline learning mode. However the sudden changes make EYL teachers find some challenges in learning and teaching using online learning mode. This situation also makes the EYL teachers have several perceptions since the use of online learning mode is not commonly used in Indonesia. This research aims to understand English teachers rsquo perceptions of performing online learning and teaching young learners and acknowledging the challenges they face during the online learning class. The research design of this study is a survey in order to achieve the goals of this study. The subjects of the research were EYL teachers in Indonesia who have been conducting online learning during the pandemic. The instruments used to collect the data are online questionnaire and semi-structured interview. The findings show that EYL teachers rsquo perceptions of using online learning are positive compared to previous studies. This positive perception comes from teachers who taught young learners in some big cities. During online learning class some teachers face some challenges such as lacked of facilities students rsquo performance and motivation and parents rsquo support during online classes. The result of this study can be used as a consideration for EYL teachers to use online learning class as an option to support offline learning mode. Future research about English teachers rsquo perceptions and challenges on using online learning mode in more specific learning activities or at different grade levels is considered necessary.
