Non-native javanese students\' language use and attitude toward javanese, indonesian, and english / Sabtrinovyanda
Abstrak
Malang is an example of a multilingual city in Indonesia signified by its cultural diversities. While Indonesian is the national language Javanese remains a prominent marker of identity and communication for the local populations. This research aims to analyze how language is used by Non-Native Javanese (NNJ) students of Malang by investigating (1) the language choice and formality patterns based on places topics interlocutors and cultural background (2) the factors influencing language choice and their (3) language attitude towards Javanese Indonesian and English. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive statistics to comprehensively analyze language choices and attitudes among NNJ students in Malang. Data collection for this research involves an online questionnaire and interviews with 158 subjects. Thematic analysis will be used as the data analysis technique. The results show that language choices attitudes and factors of language choice among NNJ students in Malang are affected by the settings the topics of conversation the social relation with the interlocutor and the cultural background. Positive attitudes toward Javanese were particularly evident in campus settings where its use was notably higher than in home or work environments. Furthermore the subjects rsquo language choice positively correlates with the informality of the topics discussed. This research also finds a tendency towards Javanese in more relaxed conversations. The most positive attitude towards Javanese was observed by interlocutors in interactions with lecturers. Conversely a tendency to switch to Indonesian was noted when conversing with elders.
