The eighth graders’ perception on the use of web-based media to improve their listening skills / Ahmad Fahrul Fahruddin

Abstrak
Listening is an active intentional process of making sense of what one hears. The listening activity does not stand alone as it involves learning another language skills such as writing speaking and reading and learning of language components such as pronunciation vocabulary and grammar. Using survey design this research aims to capture the eighth graders rsquo perspective about the use of web-based media to improve their listening skills. This research employed survey design approach involving 120 students of Public Junior High School 18 at Mojolangu Malang City East Java Indonesia. In this study the researcher also used Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) theory to see how students can accept technology to improve their listening skills. From the findings of this research students perspectives on web-based media showed positive responses. Most students agreed that web-based media could improve listening skills and their interests. Based on this research the researcher can conclude that the students perceived the use of web-based media positively as they reported that the web-based media such as Storylineonline Edpuzzle Five minute English ESL kids lab etc. can help them improve their listening skills. About 79 8% respondents agreed that Web-based media is a more effective platform than the audio media used by most English teachers because web-based media provide a variety of listening materials in the form of quiz puzzle and audiovisual. Besides web based media can be accessed online anytime and anywhere easily. However the results of the study also indicated drawbacks of the use of web-based media to learn listening namely learning devices lack of experience and understanding in using web-based media.
