Tenth grade students’ language problems in writing recount text and the possible causes / Septiya Rahmawati

Abstrak
Writing has always been challenging for students in high school. One of the texts that they have a problem with is recount text. Writing a text certainly involves a lot of aspects especially language problems. The purpose of the research is to discover students rsquo language problems in writing recount text. It also discovers the possible causes behind the language problems. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this research. The research subjects were 35 students of grade ten in Public Senior High School 9 Malang. The instruments of this research were a writing test an open-ended questionnaire and an interview guideline. The results of this research showed that the students had language problems namely grammar like the difficulties in using simple past tense using preposition pronouns nouns singular/plural determiners and writing sentences in English. The possible causes behind the language problems are lack of knowledge especially in grammar and lack of proficiency in English especially in arranging sentences in English and applying grammar. Therefore teachers should develop the solution that can help students improve their ability in writing recount text.
