The representation of desperation phases in Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation: a critical multimodal discourse analysis / Dedhi Lugita Hadi Wijaya
Abstrak
A movie as an outcome of popular culture uses its perseverance to amuse the people who watch it and convey precepts usually associated with societal problems and the filmmakers ventures. Characters in a film are a crucial component not only to entertain the audience but also to deliver the director s point of view about a certain issue. Therefore this research investigates how Sofia Coppola s film Lost in Translation portrays the phases of desperation experienced by the main characters resulting from different aspects of their desperate moments. This paper uses a critical multimodal discourse analysis to investigate the desperation phases of the main characters. Also the researcher utilized the qualitative method to process the data from the visualization and dialogue of the characters in the film. The results revealed that three phases of desperation phases undergone by the main characters throughout the movie.
