Negative politeness strategies used by the host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! Talk Show / Rohmah Fridasantyka

Abstrak
Politeness strategies are used to show speaker rsquo s attitude toward other people rsquo s feeling. The writer used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze 20 videos of the show. This study uses Brown and Levinson s (1987) theory of politeness then to analyze the types of negative politeness in Jimmy Kimmel Live talk show then the Writer analyze host utterances toward the guest and found that 19 data consist of negative politeness strategies the findings show that only 8 strategies in this research used by the host be conventionally indirect (3) question Hedges (4) Be Pessimistic (1) Give Deference (4) Apologies (1) State the FTA as General Rule (1) Nominalize (4) Go on Record as incurring a Debt or as indebting Hearer (1). This article has shown that an interaction on talk show it is common to the speakers to pay attention to politeness toward the guest also there are no significant effect of gender toward being polite to other people.
