Developing an abridged version of george orwell novel animal farm as supplementary vocabulary learning materials for high school english learners / Tino Hendrawan Cendikia

Abstrak
Like all the skills and components in English language vocabulary is important to be mastered by students. However according to studies Indonesian high school students have very low mastery in vocabulary. Hence the need for improvement in vocabulary learning is obvious. Using abridged novel is one way to bring novelty in teaching vocabulary to students. Abridged novel is a simplified version of an original novel specifically designed for English learners. By regulating the vocabulary range and grammatical difficulties students will be exposed to new vocabularies and later on hopefully improve their vocabulary skills and reading motivations. To develop the product this research used the R amp D model designed by Borg amp Gall (1983). The development of the product took approximately 2 months. All of the text from the original novel were copied into the vocabulary profiler software in which it is available online at Lex Tutor. The software marked all the words which are necessary to be simplified. The final product is a series of abridged novel in which it has three difficulty levels (easy medium and hard) for the students to choose and read. The product is best used outside of the classroom activities as extensive reading activities.
