The effects of collaborative strategic reading (csr) on students’ reading comprehension across self-efficacy levels / M. Yusuf Harianto

Harianto, M. Yusuf - Nama Orang;

Abstrak
SUMMARY The existence of problems in reading comprehension among students creates barriers for them to comprehend texts resulting in a reduced amount of information gained. Thus it is necessary to provide effective strategies in the teaching and learning process. Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is one such strategy that integrates cooperative learning with reading comprehension instruction. Despite its potential there is a need for research focusing on its implementation and effectiveness particularly across different levels of student self-efficacy. This research aimed to examine whether the implementation of CSR enhances students rsquo reading comprehension and how this effect varies with different levels of self-efficacy. The study employed a quasi-experimental design involving 46 senior high school students in Lombok Indonesia selected through random sampling. The participants were divided into an experimental group taught using CSR and a control group taught using conventional methods. Data were collected using a 25-item reading comprehension test and a 10-item Likert scale questionnaire to assess self-efficacy levels. A two-way ANOVA and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The results indicated that CSR significantly improved students rsquo reading comprehension. Furthermore students with higher self-efficacy demonstrated better reading comprehension than those with lower self-efficacy. There was a significant interaction between teaching strategy and self-efficacy on reading comprehension outcomes. These findings suggest that CSR is an effective strategy for enhancing reading comprehension particularly for students with higher self-efficacy. The study highlights the importance of incorporating self-efficacy considerations in the implementation of reading strategies in ELT classrooms. Future research should explore long-term effects and the application of CSR in diverse educational contexts.
