Student’s perception: benefits and challenges of using instagram as an alternative for speaking learning platform / Savira Umuhani Yahya

Abstrak
Social media has become popular in variety fields including education. Consequently social media may be utilized as a substitute medium for language learning. Furthermore among the various social media Instagram may be utilized as an alternative media for learning English. This article aims to examines students perceptions of using Instagram as alternatif platform for English speaking learning. A total of 37 respondents from undergraduate English Education students have used Instagram as a medium for learning English speaking skill. The respondents were randomly selected. This study used a descriptive quantitative method with a survey approach to collect data. Students perceptions were obtained from a questionnaire as a research instrument which contained 25 statements about students perceptions advantages and experiences when learning speaking using Instagram as a learning media. In conclusion the results of the research on the statements regarding the perceptions and benefits of Instagram show that students are interested in using Instagram as a media for learning to speak English. Meanwhile students responses regarding the experiences and challenges faced some students found difficult to control themselves and stay focused in using Instagram as an alternative learning media to improve their speaking skills.
