Acquisition of declarative sentence by three-year-old multilingual child in korean tv show: a case study / Laila Fitria Andriani
Abstrak
This paper discusses the language acquisition of a three-year-old multilingual Swiss-Korean child Park Na Eun by focusing on her declarative sentence production in various languages she knows. The data consists of twenty declarative sentences from observations of five episodes of The Return of Superman featuring Park Na Eun that were analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method. The result shows that Park Na Eun can produce declarative sentences in four different languages with the frequency of incomplete sentences slightly higher than the complete ones. Park Na Eun rsquo s declarative sentence productions indicate that her language development is well developed for her age. She understands the context of the communication and responds well to her conversational partner. However her Spanish sentence production seems lower due to her lack of exposure to the language. In addition mixed words within sentences were found as she was exposed to four different languages in early childhood. This may indicate the initial evidence of cross-linguistic influence.
