Investigating problems and strategies for an efl low performer in academic speaking: insights from student responses / Eko Restu Saputra

Abstrak
Indonesian EFL learner finds it difficult to perform speaking English formally. Thus this study aims to explore the problems faced by a low performer and the solutions to the problems. The participant of this study was an English Department student of Universitas Negeri Malang who was taking the Speaking for Academic Purposes course in the study. A case study was selected to answer the research questions employing an observation checklist protocol to analyze the data during the observation and a three-stage qualitative data analysis to analyze the semi-structured interview rsquo s data. The result showed that the participant encountered affective social and linguistic problems. To overcome the problems the participant believed that practicing English regularly would be helpful also the incorporation of technology within the learning process would make it more effective. Likewise the participant emphasized teacher involvement by offering the students ample opportunities to perform speaking English. On top of that the teacher also should be concerned with the learning environment fostering the classroom condition properly. The result of this study can be used as teacher rsquo s reference in dealing with the low performers rsquo problems in English speaking. Also future researchers studying the similar topic are suggested to have more participants to be examined.
