The effectiveness of nearpod as an educational tool to enhance the students’ engagement in flsp integrated class / Metaria
Abstrak
Student engagement plays a crucial role in learning particularly in Foreign Language for Specific Purpose (FLSP) Integrated classes for non-English department students. According to Wang et al. (2016) student engagement covers four domains cognitive behavioral emotional and social engagement. To address disengagement technology such as Nearpod is essential. Nearpod a educational tool from the Student Response System (SRS) category offers features that keep students engaged from the beginning to the end of a session. While previous studies have explored Nearpod s utilization there is a lack of empirical research measuring its effectiveness in enhancing student engagement across the four domains cognitive behavioral emotional and social. This study aims to fill that gap. This study employs a mixed-method explanatory approach divided into two phases quantitative and qualitative. The quantitative phase utilizes a quasi-experimental design to examine Nearpod s effectiveness. The qualitative phase explores how Nearpod affects each domain of student engagement through detailed explanations. The instruments used in this study include student engagement self-report questionnaires video documentation field notes Nearpod post-session reports and semi-structured interviews. The Mann-Whitney U-Test revealed that Nearpod significantly increased overall student engagement (U 263.500 p 0.01). Notably behavioral (U 450.500 p 0.001) emotional (U 450.500 p 0.004) and social engagement (U 450.500 p 0.000) showed significant improvements while cognitive engagement did not (U 450.500 p 0.420). These empirical results show that Nearpod significantly enhances overall student engagement and positively impacts behavioral emotional and social engagement in FLSP integrated classes. However cognitive engagement remains unaffected suggesting a need for further exploration of strategies to address this aspect. Interviews revealed that Nearpod s interactive features help students understand materials better but do not significantly enhance cognitive engagement. It is because Nearpod engages students only at a superficial level. To improve cognitive engagement additional teaching strategies that foster critical thinking and analysis are necessary. Nearpod s significant impact on other engagement domains is attributed to its diverse interactive activities gamified quizzes interactive slides and videos. In a nutshell Nearpod is a valuable tool for enhancing student engagement in FLSP integrated classes especially in behavioral emotional and social domains. However to achieve substantial cognitive engagement it is essential to integrate additional teaching strategies that promote deeper critical thinking and analytical skills. Future research should focus on developing and testing such strategies to maximize the cognitive benefits of using Nearpod in educational settings. This research provides valuable insights for language instructors highlighting the potential of technology to foster engaging and interactive learning environments.
