Transitioning to adulthood: youth and marriage in indonesian cinema / Satya Trisnasari
Abstrak
The development of pop culture and the advancement of new media in 21st-century Indonesia have made the trend of youth and marriage more visible. This article is interested in exploring the representation of youth and marriage in two prominent Indonesian films produced and circulated within the first two decades of the 21st century in Indonesia. These films Surga Yang Tak Dirindukan (The Heaven None Missed 2015 Kuntz Agus) and Yuni (Yuni 2021 Kamila Andini) centers their narratives on youth and marriage. The researchers is particularly interested in exploring how the films support or challenge the significance of marital relationships among youth. The researchers highlights that the films project the current debate on youth and marriage. They offer different portrayals of ideal youths by using marriage as an important parameter. While SYTD promotes marriage as evidence of one rsquo s religious devotion Yuni projects marriage as problematic. In the context of Islamization and the rapid development of consumer culture and new media these films are a popular projection of the competing ideas of ideal adulthood.
