Interpersonal meaning of modality in undergraduate theses of english department / Adistia Mursyidatul Kamaliah
Abstrak
Textual analysis employing a corpus-based approach was applied to examine the interpersonal meaning of modality in the conclusion and suggestion sections of undergraduate theses in the English Department. This current study employed AntConc corpus software (version 4.2.0) as an instrument. The data were selected from 20 undergraduate theses from each specialization Linguistics and Literary Studies in March to August 2023. The undergraduate theses were written by undergraduate students who completed a bachelor rsquo s degree on time in four years specifically the class of 2019 who graduated in 2023. In examining data the researcher implemented the framework by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014) regarding interpersonal meaning. The research results revealed 288 tokens of modality in data. The frequency of modality in undergraduate theses from Linguistics specialization is 174 tokens including 160 tokens of modalization and 14 tokens of modulation. In addition the frequency of modality in undergraduate theses from Literary Studies specialization is 114 tokens including 96 tokens of modalization and 18 tokens of modulation. Furthermore related to modalization in undergraduate theses from Linguistics specialization the researcher discovered 128 tokens of probability and 32 tokens of usuality. Besides related to modalization in undergraduate theses from Literary Studies specialization the researcher discovered 91 tokens of probability and 5 tokens of usuality. Next related to modulation in undergraduate theses from Linguistics specialization the researcher uncovered 13 tokens of obligation and 1 token of inclination. Then related to modulation in undergraduate theses from Literary Studies specialization the researcher uncovered 5 tokens of obligation and 13 tokens of inclination. The undergraduate students primarily employed modalization in terms of probability in undergraduate theses of English Literature. It denotes that they used modality to convince the readers by outlining potential avenues for future studies. Since modalization outweighs modulation in English Literature undergraduate theses it signifies that undergraduate students conveyed information regarding research issue to the readers and the other scholars. Furthermore undergraduate students specializing in Linguistics are less assertive in presenting arguments and declaring opinions compared to those in Literary Studies specialization. Undergraduate students specializing in Linguistics lack strong and confident arguments when constructing their conclusion and suggestion sections. With respect to the research results the medium degree of probability is the most used modality in undergraduate theses indicating that undergraduate students have medium level of certainty in their notions. Modality in medium degree is more persuasive than low degree but not as persuasive enough as high degree of modality to convince the reader. It is crucial to convince the readers and the other scholars about the validity of research findings by using strong interpretations. As a result undergraduate students must effectively communicate their interpretations of research findings to provide recommendations for future studies and to inspire enthusiasm among the readers and the other researchers. Additionally further research on the factors influencing why undergraduate students specializing in Linguistics are less assertive in building arguments is important to conduct in order to empower undergraduate students and the other scholars in enhancing academic writing skills.
