Critical media literacy framework in efl context: from perceptions and practices to insights and transformations / Rida Afrilyasanti

Afrilyasanti, Rida - Nama Orang;

Abstrak
Grounded in the concept of meaningful language learning the pedagogy of multi-literacy and the media literacy framework this dissertation explores the establishment and implementation of a critical media literacy (CML) integration framework in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts through Action Research (AR). This AR project serves as both a remedy for the issues identified through my reflections and reconnaissance of the community and as an improvement for EFL instruction involving reflection comprehension action and transformation. The AR project forms the backbone of this study consisting of two significant actions framework construction and implementation each with two cycles. Initially reflections and community reconnaissance revealed significant gaps in CML skills among teachers and students unempirical attempts at CML integration and an under-addressed CML curriculum. The first cycle of framework construction involved reviewing existing media literacy frameworks. Finding these unsuitable for EFL contexts the second cycle engaged EFL teachers in developing a tailored CML integration framework. Once established the implementation action began. The first cycle of the second action examined suitable web-based applications while the second cycle applied the framework using different learning strategies. Throughout the process continuous reflection comprehension of challenges strategic actions and transformative outcomes were emphasized leading to enhanced CML skills for students and professional growth for teachers. The study focuses on four primary domains (1) teachers perspectives on CML integration in EFL (2) development of CML integration frameworks in EFL (3) implementation of the framework and (4) implications of CML practices in EFL. Chapter 4 details these studies including community reconnaissance framework construction implementation and transformation reflection contributing to significant personal and professional growth. The research questions serve as critical indicators for evaluating the effectiveness of CML integration in EFL instruction. Action Research emphasizes process reporting over mere positive outcomes (Piggot-Irvine amp Bartlett 2008) and encourages continuous reflection and refinement (Mertler 2021). The dissertation includes several smaller studies that contribute to the overall objectives. Initial reflections in Chapters 1 and Studies 1 and 2 identified the need for a new CML integration framework in EFL as detailed in Study 3. Framework construction involved two cycles reviewing existing frameworks and developing a new one for EFL. Implementation also involved two cycles identifying web-based applications and applying instructional strategies viii documented in Studies 4 5 6 and 7. Evaluations of the entire process are presented in Studies 8 and 9 with the overall AR report in Study 10. Study 10 published alongside this dissertation showcases real-life examples of CML integration in EFL. A handbook presents practical guidelines and teaching practices teachers contribute providing valuable resources for educators. Table 1 summarizes the studies included in this dissertation. Despite the challenges of conducting action research the study demonstrated significant personal and professional growth for participants. The AR process enabled teachers and students to implement necessary changes contributing to the literature on CML instruction as a pedagogical enhancement and professional development tool. The study recommends that policymakers support CML integration in core curricula particularly in EFL teaching and provide resources for integrating CML. Further research is suggested to investigate the causal relationships between CML use and educational outcomes such as language and critical life skills development. In essence this dissertation provides a foundation for future longitudinal research using diverse methodologies to explore the impact of CML integration on EFL teaching and learning beyond traditional language acquisition.
