Eighth graders’ recount text errors on simple past tense and temporal conjunction / Arif Barlaman
Abstrak
This study focuses on the errors found in recount texts written by secondary high school students emphasising the use of simple past tenses and temporal conjunctions. This research used a qualitative approach and observation method to identify errors by evaluating students rsquo writing. The findings reveal that the total error count for simple past tense usage is 88 while temporal conjunction errors have an amount of 65. The predominant error identified in students writing is misformation while the least to appear is misordering. The influence of the mother language makes the grade eight students produce a high error percentage in misformation. The analysis demonstrates the error in the usage of simple past tenses is bigger than in usage of temporal conjunction. The simple past tense errors have a percentage of 57 52% while the percentage of temporal conjunction errors is 42 48%. Based on the findings an appropriate suggestion for students is to familiarize them with regular reading passages containing simple past tense and temporal conjunctions.
