Developing english book for islamic primary students based on Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) / Azzahrotul Karimah

Abstrak
Madrasah Diniyah students need English language education that aligns with their cultural and religious context. A needs assessment shows a preference for integrating General English (GE) with Islamic content. Therefore the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach is optimal balancing language and content learning by combining English education with Islamic teachings. This approach provides a comprehensive educational experience that enhances language skills and cultural-religious understanding aligning with English for Young Learners (EYL) principles emphasizing interactive and age-appropriate methods. Developing an English textbook based on Islamic content using the CLIL approach addresses the specific educational needs of Madrasah Diniyah students at the elementary and junior high school levels. The ADDIE (Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation) model ensures a systematic and effective process for creating an educational resource that integrates language learning with cultural and religious education. This initiative aims to improve English proficiency while deepening students connection to Islamic heritage and values. The pre-test scores for all students combined total 134 while the post-test scores total 204 reflecting a significant increase of approximately 52.24% indicating a positive trend in student learning and comprehension. Teacher feedback shows high satisfaction with ratings between 80% and 90% affirming the book s effectiveness as a valuable educational tool. Additionally 80.77% of students preferred the book s instructional approach. Expert feedback recommended adding activities to foster creativity and critical thinking including a guide for Arabic to Indonesian transliteration. Overall the book is well-received with recommendations for minor improvements to enhance its effectiveness and utility in teaching English within an Islamic context. Integrating stories of the prophets into the Journey into English (JiE) book is recommended to enrich English language learning with Islamic values and cultural context. Simplifying the book to reduce language complexity is also advised to improve student comprehension. Additionally conducting workshops for Madrasah Diniyah teachers is recommended to facilitate effective use of the book and employing flashcards based on the book s material is recommended to enhance students speaking skills interactively and appropriately for their age in line with EYL principles.
