The influence of malangan javanese accent on english phoneme production among undergraduate efl students: english exposure, gender, and foreign language instruction / Azka Aqlia Sudibyo
Abstrak
This study investigates how Malangan Javanese speakers produce English phonemes and how they compare to English speakers. This study also wants to find out how English exposure gender and foreign language instruction influence the production of English phonemes by Malangan Javanese speakers. A qualitative descriptive research design was utilized in this study. The data in this study was elicited from questionnaires audio recordings and interviews. This study also used the 6.4.13 version of PRAAT software to analyze the data. This research found that the Malangan Javanese accent influences the minimal pairs production on bilabial /p/ /b/ labio-dental /f/ /v/ and alveolar / / / /. Furthermore Malangan Javanese accent also influenced the production of several vowels for instance / / / / /e/ / / / / / . Early exposure to English resulted in better pronunciation and accuracy. Regarding gender this study also reported that female speakers have better and more precise pronunciation than males. Lastly foreign language instruction will help students to improve their English pronunciation. Those findings highlight that L2 English phoneme production is affected by English exposure gender and foreign language instruction.
