The effectiveness of webtoon\'s slice of life genre to improve reading proficiency of the eighth graders / Sandy Toga

Abstrak
This study focuses on improving eighth-grade students reading proficiency by using Webtoon s slice-of-life genre at a public junior high school in Malang during the 2023/2024 academic year. To address the problems of poor reading proficiency a unique technique using visually appealing Webtoon comics of the slice-of-life genre was used in conjunction with comprehension questions based on Barret rsquo s Taxonomy. The research question is Are there any significant differences in the students rsquo proficiency after being treated using Webtoon slice-of-life genre The sample of this research is thirty students of eight-grade at a junior high school in Malang with all eight-grade students at the school as the population using the convenience sampling method for participant selection. The design is a pre-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design. The value of the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test result is 0.00 lt 0.05 which means that the hypothesis H1 is not rejected. This suggests that there is sufficient evidence to believe that the use of the slice-of-life genre on webtoon has positively impacted students rsquo reading proficiency. It is recommended to utilize Webtoon with specific genres in teaching and learning activities that could boost students rsquo learning outcomes.
