Turning red: challenging the stereotypical asian parenting on screen / Geia Pratita Adiarti
Abstrak
Turning Red is an animated film by Domee Shi that has intriguing cultural value because it depicts a family with an Asian cultural background living in Canada. This study offers extensive observations on the portrayal of Meilin s parents roles. Meilin s parents have complex roles and do not conform to conventional parenting patterns in Asia when it comes to educating their only daughter. Meilin s mother Ming although depicted as more dominant in parenting also shows a side of vulnerability and emotional development. Meanwhile the portrayal of Meilin s father Jin contrasts with his wife s character yet he plays a crucial role as a loving support figure. This research uses a cultural studies approach to stereotypical parenting styles in Asia. This research argues for re-evaluating the stereotypical representation of parental roles in Asia by examining in depth the dynamics of the Meilin family in the film Turning Red. This research also advocates equal involvement of both parents in raising children for the overall welfare of the family. The goal of this study is to encourage discussion about more diverse and reflective representations of the role of parents in media and literature as well as to encourage parents to actively participate in raising their children.
